5-day desert tour from Marrakech itinerary:

Your 5-day excursion from Marrakech begins today when our driver will pick you up at the airport up until your scheduled arrival time. Check-in at the hotel or riad upon arrival. You will have the remainder of the day to relax and explore Jemaa el Fnaa and the souks.

After being picked up from your Marrakech Riad or hotel, your desert trip will officially begin. In Tizi-n-Tishka in the high Atlas Mountains, our crew pauses to admire the spectacular panorama. The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ait Ben Haddou is our next destination. Many films, such as “Lawrence of Arabia,” “Gladiator,” and “Alexander,” have used the site, therefore making it famous. Following lunch, we’ll continue seeing the region’s breathtaking beauty and historic attractions, such as the Taourirt Kasbah in Ouarzazate and Roses Valley, the site of the annual Festival of Roses.

We discover the little Berber villages of Skoura, El Kelaa des M’Gouna, and Boumalene Dades as we go. Our day will end at that time. Our hotel will provide both dinner and breakfast throughout our stay.

We depart Boumalene Dades for Merzouga and the largest windswept sand dunes in Morocco, Erg Chebbi. Via the Berber town of Tinghir, we reach Todra Gorge, where the 600-meter-tall cliffs are just 10 meters apart. We’ll leave Todra and drive through a variety of Berber villages on the way to Tinjdad, where we’ll have lunch (or, if you want, you may continue on to Rissani, where you can have the local specialty, Berber Pizza if you arrive before noon).

After lunch, we go to Merzouga to check into a hotel and store our luggage. We cross the Erg Chebbi dunes on camels until we reach a Berber camp. These sand dunes are 20 kilometers in length and between 5 and 8 kilometers wide, making them the highest in all of North Africa. The setting is unique and diverse.

We take a 1 hour and 30-minute camel ride from the hotel to the camp, where we maintain our nomadic Berber identity. The dunes themselves offered part of the required infrastructure, so we added a restaurant and kitchen to our three Berber tents. We provide bedding, including beds, blankets, and pillows, for the tents. When the sun sets over the desert, we all crowd around the fire and listen to some music, maybe some Berber drums.

Just after breakfast, you will cross the dunes, passing the oasis of MERZOUGA, the nomadic repository, and the Blacks’ town of KHAMLIA. You will be welcomed by Sudanese slaves when you visit the Gnawa culture to learn about their music and way of life. In direct range to the lake of Merzouga and its bird population, you will depart for Rissani. Formerly known as Sijilmassa, this was the meeting place for Mali’s Timbuktu-bound salt caravans. The souk is a marketplace where spices, produce, and clothing are sold to tourists. After having pizza for lunch in Rissani, you will return to your riad, where you can relax.

Later that day, you have a walk in the desert and explore it more on your own.

Our camel man will wake you up just before dawn so that you can witness the sun rising over the sand dunes. We will begin our camel ride in the midst of winter, when the days are short, pausing to welcome the morning along the way. Following settling into the hotel, there will be time for showers and breakfast before we continue on to Fez.

The route from Merzouga to Fez passes via Arfoud, Errachidia, the Ziz Valley, Midelt, the Cedar Forest of Azrou, Ifrane, and Fez. On a sunny day, it is possible to see one of the monkey species that inhabit the region’s forests. We will stop for lunch at one of the many restaurants along the route. You will rely on our guide to securely transport you to the hotel or riad of your choosing. At the end of the 5-day excursion, we will return you to your Riad or hotel. We hope you enjoyed your stay in Morocco and wish you the best of success on your travels.
