7-day desert tour Fes to Marrakech:
- Day 1: Guided Sightseeing in Fes
Our 7-day desert journey from Fes to Marrakech starts with a climate-controlled sightseeing tour of Fes accompanied by a bilingual, local guide. The Andalusia Mosque built at the end of the 9th century, and the tanners’ quarters, where leather is made using only natural colors, will be our first stops. El-Attarine Madrasa, constructed in 1325 and situated in the heart of the medina, is the largest religious Quarraouine Mosque.
In addition to Azouia Moulay Idriss, non-Muslims may also access the Royal Palace, the Nejjarine Museum, and the Bab Boujloud Gate. We will not consider our trip complete until we have visited all of the key attractions. Following (Night/dinner), we will drop you off at your hotel/riad in Fez.
- Day 2: Fez - Ifrane - Midelt – Ziz Gorges - Erfoud - Rissani - Merzouga
Your driver will pick you up from your hotel or riad in Fes and head to the Middle Atlas mountain villages of Ifrane and Azrou, where you may go on safari to view Barbary apes in their natural habitat. Passing through the Tizi Ntalghamt pass on the way to Midelt and then following the magnificent Ziz Gorges carved through volcanic rock, you will be treated to breathtaking views of the Middle-Atlas plateau before the landscape suddenly changes to reveal desert hints as you approach the city of Errachidia.
After lunch, we’ll proceed via the Ziz Valley to Erfoud, Rissani, and Merzouga. We will have mint tea before loading our luggage onto camels and riding to a Berber camp in the Erg Chebbi Sad Dunes. In addition to being the longest (20 kilometers) and widest (5 kilometers) sand dunes in North Africa, they are also the highest. This environment is both distinct and diverse.
We will proceed to Erfoud and Rissani for lunch before departing for the village of Merzouga, where you will be greeted with a drink of mint tea before checking into our hotel/riad.
- Day 3: Merzouga Desert Tour & Camel Trek (Night in Desert Camp)
Following a substantial breakfast, our day of exploration will continue with a visit to a neighborhood inhabited by dark-skinned people of African heritage. In this area, our hosts are Malians.
Following seeing the activity of the Miffis Mines, we will travel over the gorgeous desert hidden behind the dunes and stop for a hot drink with the Bedouins before returning to the hotel. Before traveling into the mysterious Erg-Chebbi Sand Sea, your local guides will train you on correct mounting and dismounting procedures, as well as other safety precautions. Spend the night in a tent, just like the Berbers do.
- Day 4: Merzouga village - Todra Gorge - Dades Valley
Just after a healthy breakfast at the hotel, we’ll go on an off-road excursion into the picturesque black desert, passing through Berber oasis communities adorned with palm trees and mud houses on our route to Alnif. We will relax and refuel at a town known for its fossil trade before continuing on to the high Atlas Mountains, where we will wonder at the contrasting natural beauty of the gorges of Todgha, formed by water seeping through crevices in the rocks.
That after seeing the gorges, we will proceed via the beautiful highlands to Dades Valley, where we will spend the night in a hotel with a wonderful view.
- Day 5: Boumalne Dades - Dades and gorges valley - Skoura - Ouarzazate
We travel across the Dades Gorges and the Dades Valley en route to Ouarzazate and Kalaat M’Gonna, departing immediately after breakfast. The “way of a thousand kasbahs” in Dades Valley is a favorite route for photographers due to the number of breathtaking shooting opportunities along the road.
Afterward, as we travel through the rose-growing region, we will stop in the “rose city” of Kalaat M’Gonna to load up on rosewater. Following seeing the Kasbah of Ameridil in the oasis of Skoura, we will travel to Ouarzazate, where we will spend the afternoon visiting the Taourirte Kasbah and enjoying lunch. A hotel or riad in Ouarzazate will host our evening dinner and overnight stay.
- Day 6: Ouarzazate through Ait Ben Haddou to the High Atlas Mountains and finally to Marrakech
After breakfast, we will head to the Kasbah of Taourirt, the old residence of the Glaoui or Marrakech pasha. We may also visit the TUE Film Museum and film production facilities if you’re interested. A half-hour from Ouarzazate, we will visit the ksar (fortified town) of Ait Ben Haddou to see its famed Kasbah (declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986). This world-class set was used to shoot such masterpieces as Gladiator, Obelix, The Mummy, The Jewel of the Nile, and Penélope Cruz’s Sahara.
We’ll have lunch in the town before proceeding to Marrakech through the mountain port of Tizi Ntichka and further photo possibilities. We are leaving this gorgeous region for a more active one. At around 6 p.m., we will take a shuttle to the hotel and conclude our day there.
- Day 7: Airport Transfer
We will drop you off at the airport today, the final day of your 7-day tour of Morocco that began in Fes.
